About San Diego
Ah, sunny San Diego. The 619 area code is not only one of the sunniest in the country, but it’s also home to some of California’s hottest attractions. No adventure in the 619 area code is complete without a full day’s visit to Balboa Park where a sprawling 1,200 acres unfold to present a myriad of natural sights to take in and discover. It’s there that you’ll also find the iconic San Diego Zoo. However, the 619 area code is so incredibly diverse that you can go from exploring greenery to ocean waves in one day by skipping over to Coronado Bay. Whether you’re taking a San Diego Harbor cruise, catching a Padres game at Petco Park, or unwinding in the Gaslamp District, there’s a lot to love about the 619 area code.
Areas Served
The 619 area code is bordered by the 949 area code, used for Orange County, in the north, and by the Mexican border in the south. This means that, despite covering a small geographic area, the 619 area code serves over 1.3 million people in the city of San Diego, plus over 200,000 people in Chula Vista, and numerous more in other small towns such as El Cajon, La Mesa, and Coronado.
The History of 619
The 619 area code formerly served all of the southernmost parts of California, extending from the Pacific Ocean to the Nevada border and down to Mexico. Today, it barely touches Tecate and only goes as far north as Rancho Santa Fe and the southern edge of the city of Encinitas. In modern culture, football player Reggie Bush made the 619 area code famous when he painted it on his eyeblack during games. However, the history of the 619 area code dates back to 1982 when it was introduced as a split for the 714 area code. It served all of San Diego and most other areas of southern California south of Orange County until 1997. Then, the area was split into two. The northern part of San Diego and its suburbs were covered by area code 858, while the 619 area code remained for the rest of the region. Today, you’ll find that both area codes cover pretty much precisely the same area, with the 619 area code remaining the more prominent area code for established businesses in San Diego, such as Petco Park and Marriott hotels.
