Areas Served
The 404 area code serves Downtown Atlanta and the suburbs located roughly within the geographical area that is encircled by Interstate 825. This means that you’ll find landlines and cellphone numbers with a 404 area code in Clayton, DeKalb, and Fulton counties as well as Cobb, Douglas, and Gwinnett counties.
The History of 404
Once serving the entire state of Georgia, the 404 area code now serves the capital city of Atlanta. Before becoming an enclave area code, which means that it’s completely surrounded by the 770 area code which serves mainly the suburbs of Atlanta outside of Interstate 285, the 404 area code had quite the journey. In the early 1950s, the 404 area code, which was serving all of Georgia at the time, was split off with the 912 area code. The latter was assigned to every area south of Macon while the 404 area code served the entire northern half of the state from border to border. Today, most locals in the area know that the 404 area code covers roughly the area inside of Interstate 285, also known as The Perimeter. This means that while the 404 area code serves Downtown Atlanta, it also covers the suburbs located inside of The Perimeter, such as Decatur.
