About Long Island

The 516 area code covers exclusively Nassau County of Long Island - home to history dating back to the late 19th century. Museum Row is one of the most popular attractions - where you can find some of Long Island’s best museums including the Cradle of Aviation Museum and Long Island’s Children Museum. You could take a step back into Long Island’s Gilded Age by taking a walk and seeing a show at Old Westbury Gardens. Or if you’re looking for sun and sand, explore the historic Long Beach Boardwalk.

Areas Served

The 516 area code serves Nassau County - situated on western Long Island, bordering New York City's borough of Queens to the west, and Suffolk County to the east. Nassau County contains just two historic cities - Glen Cove and Long Beach, both a part of Long Island’s Gold Coast established in the early 1890s.

History of 516.jpg

The History of 516

In 1947, Nassau County shared the 914 area code with Suffolk County and the lower Hudson Valley. In 1951, just four years later, Nassau County and Suffolk County were split from the Hudson Valley, and shared their own prime area code, 516, and became the official area code of Long Island. While Long Island has seen dramatic growth in both population and telephone services in the 50 years since it’s introduction, Nassau County and it’s 516 area code have not yet been affected by this surge. However, it looks as if the 516 area code could run out of numbers by the end of 2023.
