About the San Fernando Valley

As the Californians might say, just take the 405 north up to where it meets the 101 and you’ll eventually reach the 818 area code, also known as the San Fernando Valley. While often lumped in with Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and Hollywood, the Valley actually has a personality all its own. And, you’ll find that the 818 area code is filled with fantastic, fun things to do and see. Starting in the east, you’re able to meander through Burbank and hop on a studio tour at backlots such as Warner Bros. Studios. Then, take the 101 straight on over to Universal Studios Hollywood before marveling at the creativity found within the streets of the North Hollywood Arts District. From there, the 818 area code spills out all over the rest of the Valley, tempting you to explore Ventura Boulevard and other iconic Valley hotspots.

Areas Served

As one of two area codes that serve the San Fernando Valley, the 818 area code stretches all the way out in Agoura Hills to the west and over towards Glendale in the east, covering various points of Los Angeles in between. Reaching just below Highway 101, the 818 area code also covers such cities as Burbank, Calabasas, Monrovia, Westlake Village, and Bell Canyon, serving over 2.1 million residents and over 70,000 businesses in the area.

The History of 818

Anybody local to Los Angeles knows that there’s a pretty big difference between Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley. And, the 818 area code is evidence of that, separating the San Fernando Valley in the north from Los Angeles and other well-known cities like Santa Monica in the south. The 818 area code was created from the 213 area code, which now serves Downtown Los Angeles, along with the 310 area code, which was used to serve other areas of Los Angeles such as Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, and Malibu. And, it’s since become a somewhat popular term for the (San Fernando) Valley. In the film Pulp Fiction, you’ll hear Jules references “the 818,” and in the film Go, Ronna tells another character not to “go 818” on him. Today, the 818 area code is used mostly for northern and eastern Valley numbers while the 747 area code is more for numbers in the southern and western parts of the Valley. And, despite covering a large portion of the San Fernando Valley, which is in Los Angeles County, 5% of 818 numbers are in Ventura County.
